Still Going Strong

by Meghan on April 25, 2012

I haven’t updated recently, but don’t take that to mean we haven’t been busy! There’s been a lot going on, but nothing that’s super interesting or exciting. We’re finally getting to the “fun” stuff, though. From this point on, pretty much everything we do will really make a difference in how the house looks and feels.

So, in light of that news, expect me to start updating the site a bit more often!

To catch you up on what we’ve been up to:

We have walls!

They still need to be primed and painted, but at least you can’t see between the rooms anymore!

It took the workers about 6 days to get all of the drywall up and finished. There’s still a corner of Dylan’s room that’s undone, because we’re going to replace the electrical panel, so they’re going to come back to finish that at a later date.

We have a new patio door!

Technically, this is a project that would have been saved for the next phase of the remodel, but we needed to have the outside of the house prepped so the stucco guys could work their magic, so the door got replaced sooner rather than later. It also necessitated that we remove the old fireplace and chimney. And the rock on the wall in the Living Room.

That was a fun project:

Ugly rock? GONE!

Chimney Rubble

For a reminder on what it looked like before, go here.

We have stucco! Almost!

You can see the new (almost finished) stucco on the back of the house in the patio door picture up above. The front of the house also has the first two layers of stucco. They’re waiting for us to finish installing the new front door before they finish the stucco on the porch.

Notice the need for an entryway organizational system?

A sneak peak of the new door-

And we have to pick a stucco color -

So many choices!

We also have bathroom tile!

For the Main Bathroom

We just need to have the cabinets delivered (hopefully this week) and get some paint on the wall before we can install it.

Things are starting to look up!

Dylan’s Bedroom – In the Works

by Meghan on February 19, 2012

Dylan’s bedroom is proving to be a bit more difficult to nail down than Zachary’s. (Construction pun totally intended.) He’s had vintage sports bedding from Pottery Barn Kids since before he was born, so I’ve been very hopeful that he’d want to stick with it. Not only because it’s easy and cheap*, but because I’m pretty attached to it.

It seems super cliche to do sports themed bedrooms for (at least) two of our boys, but it looks like that’s the direction in which we’re headed. After perusing Pinterest with me this morning, Dylan has decided that he wants a baseball room. Painted in red and blue stripes. He’s very patriotic.

I’ve already found a few items that I’d like to add to what we already have:

Shaggy Baseball Rug

Another PBK Baseball Pillow

And I think we might attempt to do a mural type paining on one of his walls…

Baseball Stitches Mural - Art of Walls Inc

Baseball Mural - Whimsical Wall Murals

And then do something a bit more understated on the other walls.

We also have a metal locker that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with, and I think I might find space for it in Dylan’s room. It’s similar to this one:

From: Artistic Designs for Living

I’d also love to (eventually) make him a desk that has baseball bats as legs. How cute would that be?

Now I just have to figure out how to make it all work together without being too much!

*The bedding totally wasn’t cheap when it was purchased seven years ago, but continuing to use it is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying all new bedding. Ahem.

A Reminder From The Past

February 15, 2012

It was tucked away in the wall, safely hidden for almost 50 years. Browned, water stained, and brittle, it was the real estate section of the local paper, dated July 29, 1965. While it was certainly interesting to look through, it was also depressing as all get out. Houses that would now sell for around [...]

Zachary’s Bedroom – In The Works

February 7, 2012

Now that things are (hopefully) starting to move along, I find myself putting a little more thought into what exactly we’re going to do for the kid’s bedrooms. My main focus has been Zach’s room, because long ago we made one key decision on something “fun” to put in it, and that has at least [...]

Kitchen Windows

February 4, 2012

We switched out the kitchen windows today. The kitchen isn’t currently under renovation, but we have to redo so much stucco on the front of the house, we figured it would make sense to do the windows now. It got dark as we were finishing, so I don’t have a real finished photo, but this [...]

A New Year & The Countdown Is On

January 7, 2012

Today marks the first weekend of 2012 that we are working on the house. It also marks the beginning of the end. Because I fully intend to have (at least the inside) of my house completed by the end of this year. We’ll see what DJ has to say about that when he read this… [...]

Our Biggest Decision to Date – Flooring

November 23, 2011

When we bought this house we knew immediately that we wanted wood flooring throughout. Both because our kids have allergies and carpets are frowned upon, and because we like the look of it. Initially we were leaning towards really, really dark Engineered Hardwood. After doing some research, and talking to the salesmen at Lumber Liquidators, [...]

Decorating My Master Bedroom

November 20, 2011

Up until this point, I’ve always had a bedroom that was thrown together. A hand-me-down dresser from a family member, my great-grandmother’s rocking chair, DJ’s dresser from when he was a kid, nightstands made of cheap throw away tables, and a quilt on the bed that I bought…a really long time ago. It worked for [...]

Picture Perfect View

October 17, 2011

There’s been a lot going on with the house lately. But it consists of a lot of jackhammering, digging, plumbing and thinking. So, obviously, DJ’s been very busy lately and I’ve been doing a lot of planning for when all of that is over and I can paint walls and hang curtains. Really important stuff, [...]

Let the Spending Begin!

September 23, 2011

We’re finally to the point of the remodel where we can start buying things for the house. Fun stuff, not just wood and nails and things that, while important, I couldn’t really care less about. Ahem. Yesterday, we decided on, and ordered, bathroom fixtures. After spending an obscene amount of time laboring over what to [...]
